Downloading the OFW with navifirm

So, how are you friendz? Everything must be running well and good.. :)

Have you been extremely enthusiastic in the question of upgrading your Nokia phone? Well, today I am going to discuss with you a procedure by which you can really upgrade your phone sitting in front of your PC (rather, I would suggest you, if your ups is faulty, then switch on your notebook for this, as power failure will certainly damage your phone!!)

This procedure is not only applicable specifically to S60v5, but to every Nokia phones.

Be careful!! Wrong methods of up-gradation will definitely kill your phone..So please be sure that you are well aware of the actual methods..If you are not very sure of the step-by-step procedures, please feel free to be consulted in the comments..

If you have downloaded the navifirm zip file from the link provided in my previous post, provided you have a fast internet connection (broadband with free usage, I would suggest), you are ready to begin:

1. Switch off your phone, open back cover, remove battery, and note down the RM number, model number and code.

2. Extract the zip file to find the navifirm.exe in any hdd partition you prefer.

3. Click on the executable file.

This kind of a blank screen appears..It would then search for an internet connection itself, you could be sure of this fact by seeing the rotating wheel..

4. After sometimes, the Product list gets downloaded and the following image is a screen shot of that..

5. Now You have to select your model number from the product list. I am demonstrating with a Nokia 5233, yours may be different..

With this selection, the releases column also fills up.

This selection also shows you the RM-number of your phone, so please note it down..

6. By dialing *#0000#, on your phones dial you note down the the software version number, accordingly you choose the higher version number from the releases section. ( Suppose your phone have the software version installed is 21.1.102, then you can choose 21.1.102 or higher. Don't download lower version files, flashing with this will kill your phone. )

I chose 40.1.3, the variant screen also now fills up! The variants are different varieties of same model number according to geographical location and products codes..

7. Scroll down the variant list to match the country, your Nokia handset color and product code ( the one you obtained by removing the battery). selecting the required one will fill the files column..

8. Now you are ready to download the files. Tick each and every box in the files column and click download from FiRe button. Your files will start downloading..

9. After you hit that button, a window pops up and asks you to specify a storage place. You confirm the folder where you want them to be downloaded, and press ok. Immediately, the files started downloading..

That's it. Wait, till the downloading completes. Also keep in mind that these downloading procedure do not have any resume capability :( , so if you cancel, then again repeat the same procedure next time!!

What to do with the files? Keep some cigarettes left in the packet dude!! :D ..Use them in my next post where I will tell you what to do with these stuffs!! Meanwhile, indulge your hands in action in the comments section..

Keep Smiling.. :)

CFW vs OFW

Interested about my previous post? ;) OK, then this time, you will be knowing more about the OFW and CFW.

When Nokia launches a phone in the market, the phone comes with a version of OS, which changes form time to time. Suppose you bought a 5233 in May, 2010 and someone buys it in December, 2011 then both of you will have the same specification of the phone but the version of the OS must differ. To know which version of OS you are using, press in your dial *#0000#. You must get your version number there. Sometimes, you may feel to upgrade your phone to a higher version, then you can go to your nearest Nokia Care and ask them to upgrade your phone (of course giving them the "appropriate" charges for that. B) ) or you can flash your phone with the original firmware files provided by Nokia, downloaded in your PC from internet by a special software called navifirm.

Don't download the OFW files now, I will definitely provide you with detailed picture guide how to do that.

(ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND THAT FLASHING WITH WRONG VERSION AND WRONG METHOD WILL SURELY BRICK/KILL YOUR PHONE, YOU CAN'T YOURSELF REVERT BACK TO A WORKING PHONE AGAIN)

Actually, what Nokia do is suppress the full functionality of the hardware they supplied by the aid of software. The sole reason for this is business. So, if you want to customize your phone according to your needs then you will have to depend on the modders (if you don't know how to build your own CFW :( ). The customized firmware files are available in plenty of numbers, later I will provide you the links. For time being, just think of what actually you want? To depend on Nokia and be satisfied with very low quality speaker sound or have a customized OS with improved frame rates, UI, overclocked processor and many, many more mods :O . Let me know what you will be going for.. Take Care..See you soon.. :)

A pre-requisite

Do you own a Nokia s60v5 (eg. 5230, 5233, 5235, 5800) etc phone? Bored with the old conventional looks, are you trying to change the user interface (UI) with many themes, and apps like SPB or so? Yes, of course you can do so but, ultimately when you format the phone, all these things are gone. Changing the looks also don't improve any performance of the phone, but in some cases they might be extremely helpful  to downgrade your phone performance by unnecessarily eating up your phone's RAM.

What dou you do, when the old Windows 98 is not up to your expectations? Yes, you upgrade your PC with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 as the case may be! That is the case with your Nokia phones too. The OS of firmware(FW) which is provided with your Nokia device, needs to be upgraded to reach your needs and expectations.

Now, FW are of two types:

1. Original Firmware or OFW which is provided by Nokia and

2. Custom firmware or CFW which is  provided by so Symbian modders like PNHT, etc free of cost.

Which one is ideal for you, OFW or CFW? Check this in my subsequent posts..
